The thyroid gland is located in the base of your neck and is responsible for using iodine to make two main hormones: Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4). There are also two glands in the brain which regulate the levels of T3 and T4 – the hypothalamus and the pituitary communicate to maintain T3 and T4 balance. It is important that the levels of T3 or T4 are not too low or too high. TSH Releasing Hormone (TRH) and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) are used by hypothalamus and pituitary gland in order to control and regulate the thyroid gland. In the body every cell is dependent upon thyroid hormones for regulating cell metabolism – a process by which our body uses energy. Many vital body functions are also regulated by the thyroid hormones such as: heart rate, breathing, central and peripheral nervous system, muscle strength, body mass, body temperature, cholesterol levels and menstrual cycle.
