INTENDED USE
Human OxLDL ELISA kit can measure concentrations of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL) present is plasma, serum, biological fluids or tissue homogenate samples. This assay has a minimum sensitivity detection limit of 1.875 ng/ml.
INTRODUCTION
Oxidized LDL (OxLDL) is a form of LDL cholesterol that has been damaged by oxidation. LDL cholesterol is considered the “bad” cholesterol because it contributes to plaque buildup in arteries. The structure of OxLDL differs from native LDL in that the apolipoprotein B-100 (protein component) becomes oxidized, as do the phospholipids and cholesterol esters. This oxidative modification alters the function of OxLDL compared to native LDL. For example, oxidized LDL is taken up by scavenger receptors on macrophages, turning them into foam cells, which are the hallmark of early atherosclerotic lesions.
OxLDL inhibits nitric oxide production and promotes platelet activation and aggregation. It is not normally detected in plasma, but levels are elevated in patients with cardiovascular disease. Factors that generate reactive oxygen species, such as smoking, hypertension, and diabetes, increase oxidized LDL formation. Reducing exposure to these risk factors may decrease OxLDL production and atherosclerosis progression.
