Procalcitonin ELISA Kit (PCT)
Full Name: Procalcitonin ELISA Kit (PCT)
Reactivity: Human
Sample Type: Serum, Plasma, Biological Fluids, Tissue Homogenates
Sensitivity: 18.75 pg/ml
INTRODUCTION
The thyroid C-cells are principally responsible for the production and secretion of the peptide hormone procalcitonin (PCT). Its structure is composed of 116 amino acids. Its synthesis is triggered by bacterial infection or inflammation. The main function is to regulate the production of other hormones, such as calcitonin. It as been used as a useful biological marker during the investigation of bacterial infections and sepsis. Elevated levels were found to be present in blood samples which was associated with bacterial infections. Early diagnosis of sepsis is critical for effective treatment and PCT levels can help healthcare providers determine the likelihood of sepsis and make timely treatment decisions.
Procalcitonin measurement in blood has been proposed to guide antibiotic therapy, with the goal of reducing unnecessary use of antibiotics. High levels are indicative of a persistent infection and antibiotics treatment may need to be extended. Whereas, low levels, indicate that an infection is resolving and antibiotics treatment can be discontinued. Circulating procalcitonin may be derived from plasma or from bone marrow-derived granulocytes. The levels are influenced by; age, gender, diseases (such as diabetes) and diet (such as milk consumption).
INTENDED USE
Human procalcitonin ELISA kit is designed for detecting concentrations of PCT (procalcitonin) present in human in plasma, serum, biological fluids and tissue homogenates. This assay has a sensitivity detection limit of 18.75 pg/ml.
