The FGF gene family consists of 22 mammalian members, includes fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21). The 120 amino acid (aa) core FGF domain found in members of the FGF family has a beta -trefoil structure. Members of the FGF-21 subfamily have a weaker affinity for extracellular matrix components like heparin than other FGFs due to the absence of one strand of the beta-trefoil. They are accordingly regarded as endocrine as opposed to paracrine and are more diffusible than other FGFs. The beta trefoil motif of the FGF family is conserved in many proteins.

All three members of the subfamily have an effect on a certain element of metabolism. They are all activated by a nuclear receptor heterodimer that contains the retinoid X receptor (RXR) and they all bind FGF receptors (FGF R) indirectly by way of co-receptors from the klotho family. Free fatty acid (FFA) activation of a PPAR alpha/RXR dimeric complex results in the production of FGF-21 by hepatocytes. The release of FFAs from triglyceride reserves by white adipose tissue is triggered by the secretion of FGF21. FFAs are oxidised and reduced to acetyl-CoA once they reach the hepatocytes.


Human FGF-21 ELISA kit can detect levels of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21, FGF21) in human cell supernatant, serum and plasma samples.


All reagents supplied need to be stored at 2 °C – 8 °C, unopened reagents will retain reactivity until expiration date. Do not use reagents beyond this date.
