Beta-Defensin 1 ELISA Kit (DEFB1)
INTENDED USE
Human beta-defensin 1 ELISA kit can detect amounts of DEFB1 (beta-defensin 1, BD-1, HBD1) present is human biological fluids, serum, plasma and tissue homogenate samples.
INTRODUCTION
Beta-defensin 1 (DEFB1) is a member of the defensin family which are small proteins (15-20 residues) that function in antimicrobial defense by penetrating a microbe’s cell membrane and cause microbial death in a manner similar to that of antibiotics. It is an antibacterial peptide that epithelial cells on mucosal surfaces constitutively express. Beta-defensins can be found in various forms in the nose passage, lungs, saliva, and breast milk. Humans express three different types of beta-defensins, which all have antimicrobial properties. The expression of DEFB1 is regulated by a number of environmental conditions including the air in which an individual’s members are raised. For example, the secretion of defensins in newborn is high during respiratory infections but drops off as the infant gains immunity.
Beta-defensin 1 is also detected, though at considerably lower levels, in people with cystic fibrosis or asbestos exposure. Breastfeeding can boost beta-defensin levels, and low levels have been linked to greater illness vulnerability as well as higher risks of asthma and allergy-related death. It is present in relatively small amounts in perspiration, urine and saliva. Formation of beta-defensins occurs through a process called protein processing.
