INTENDED USE
Human cholecystokinin ELISA kit can measure concentrations of CCK (cholecystokinin) present is plasma, serum, biological fluids or tissue homogenate samples. This assay has a minimum sensitivity detection limit of 9.375 pg/ml.
INTRODUCTION
Cholecystokinin, abbreviated CCK, is secreted by I-cells in the mucosal epithelium of the duodenum and jejunum when fats and proteins are detected, it stimulates the release of digestive enzymes and bile, allowing for the breakdown and absorption of food.
By binding CCK-receptors on the pancreatic acinar cells after being released into circulation, it triggers the discharge of pancreatic enzymes into the small intestine. These include proteases, lipases, and amylases which help digest proteins, fats, and carbohydrates from chyme entering the duodenum from the stomach. Additionally, CCK contracts the gallbladder to release stored bile, aiding the digestion and uptake of fat-soluble nutrients. It also has effects on gastric motility and emptying rates based on the volume and composition of intestinally arriving nutrients, thus coordinating stomach and intestinal activity. Furthermore, acting as a hunger suppressant, CCK induces satiety signals communicating fullness via vagal afferent nerves projecting from the gut to feeding centers in the brain.
In addition to facilitating digestion through coordinated regulation of pancreatic, biliary, and gastric functions after nutrient sensing, CCK also appears to mediate analgesic effects. Overall however, the integral role of cholecystokinin in postprandial digestive regulation is well established, from triggering pancreas and gallbladder release to inducing satiation following a meal.
