Mucin-1 (MUC-1) is a membrane-associated mucin glycoprotein that protects and lubricates epithelial surfaces. As a key component of the glycocalyx barrier on mucosal surfaces and the luminal face of glandular epithelial tissues, the extensive O-linked glycosylation of MUC-1’s extracellular domain provides hydration and anti-adhesive properties. Along with other mucins, it forms a selectively permeable gel-like barrier retaining moisture at these surfaces while limiting pathogen adhesion and invasion.

However, MUC-1 is more than a physical barrier. Its cytoplasmic tail relays extracellular signals to the interior of the cell by interacting with diverse effector proteins that influence various transcription factors and signaling pathways tied to growth, apoptosis, inflammation, and motility. For example, the MUC-1 cytoplasmic subunit binds directly to β-catenin and promotes downstream Wnt target gene expression. Through these intracellular signaling functions, MUC-1 significantly influences cellular processes central to tissue homeostasis.

Aberrant MUC-1 expression underlies the pathogenesis of numerous epithelial cancers and inflammatory disorders of mucosal tissues. Its overexpression in many adenocarcinomas promotes proliferation, blocks apoptosis, facilitates loss of polarity, and enhances cancer cell motility and invasiveness by modulating signaling pathways that drive metastasis. Hence, the remarkable functional duality of MUC-1 that maintains mucosal health in normal tissues enables pathogenesis following dysregulation.


Human mucin-1 ELISA kit can measure concentrations of MUC-1 (mucin-1, episialin, H23AG, KL-6, PEM, breast carcinoma-associated antigen DF, MAM6, PEMMUC-1) present is plasma, serum, biological fluids or tissue homogenate samples.


All reagents supplied need to be stored at 2 °C – 8 °C, unopened reagents will retain reactivity until expiration date. Do not use reagents beyond this date.
