IL-17 A/F ELISA Kit (Interleukin 17A/F)
INTENDED USE
Human IL-17 A/F ELISA kit can measure concentrations of interleukin 17A/F (IL-17 A/F) present is plasma, serum, biological fluids or tissue homogenate samples.
INTRODUCTION
Interleukin 17 (IL-17) refers to a family of inflammatory cytokines critical for antimicrobial immunity but also implicated in autoimmune pathology when dysregulated. The family contains six members (IL-17A through IL-17F), with IL-17A and IL-17F sharing the highest sequence homology. Initial discovery of this unique CD4+ T cell subset arose in the 1990s, when IL-17 induced cytokine was identified and named CTLA8. A few years later the source was confirmed as the novel T helper 17 (TH17) lineage, specialized in producing IL-17A and IL-17F upon activation by specific cytokines.
Specifically, IL-17 family cytokines trigger production of granulopoietic factors and neutrophil chemoattractants by tissue cells at barrier sites. This stimulates bone marrow release and recruitment of neutrophils while prolonging their lifespan – mobilizing rapid, sustained anti-microbial activity against extracellular pathogens during infection. Accordingly, deficiencies in TH17 development or IL-17 signaling significantly impair immunity to certain bacterial and fungal infections at mucosal surfaces. However, excessive or chronic IL-17 production can also precipitate inflammatory disease by driving tissue damage.
Dysregulated TH17 cell activity and heightened IL-17 signaling associate with several autoimmune conditions including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Antibodies neutralizing IL-17A or its receptor show efficacy in treating chronic plaque psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis in clinical trials, significantly limiting disease progression.
