MSTN ELISA Kit (MSTN/Growth Differentiation Factor 8)
INTENDED USE
Human MSTN ELISA kit can measure concentrations of MSTN/Growth Differentiation Factor 8) (MSTN) present is plasma, serum, biological fluids or tissue homogenate samples.
INTRODUCTION
Myostatin, also known as Growth Differentiation Factor 8 (GDF 8) is a protein that belongs to the transforming growth factor β family. Its role is to limit the growth of muscles by influencing the differentiation of cells during development and the growth of muscle cells, in adulthood. Myostatin works by signaling through activin receptors and acting as a regulator of muscle growth. In mammals the gene responsible for myostatin production, MSTN is relatively stable. Encodes a protein made up of 375 amino acids.
Scientific studies have indicated that levels of GDF8 could indicate the severity of heart muscle damage during a infarction (AMI) similar to peak troponin I levels. This implies that GDF8 might serve as an indicator of severity after AMI. Myostatin has been observed to inhibit muscle growth and restrict the proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). It has also been found to influence components of the Wnt pathway and suppress Wnt4 expression, which stimulates MSC proliferation. The complexity in how myostatin transmits signals arises from its involvement with signaling pathways and it is through their precise integration that myostatin exerts its inhibitory effects, on growth.
