INTRODUCTION

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is recognised as a mediator of converting B cells into antibody-producing cells, contrary to earlier theories that it was a lymphokine produced by T cells. It can aid in the expansion of murine pluripotent stem cells when combined with IL-3. While IL-6 is engaged in encouraging latent progenitor cells to begin the cell cycle, IL-3 plays a function in promoting the advancement of the cell cycle. IL-6 plays an integral role in the promotion of mega-karyopoiesis or the production of megakaryocytes. It function alongside stem cell factor and thrombopoietin to stimulate the production of megakaryocytes from hematopoietic stem cells, these are important during the process of platelet production.

Mice deficient in IL-6 have fewer megakaryocyte progenitors. Moreover, it contributes to granulopoiesis. More pronounced neutropenia than that exhibited in G-CSFR knockout mice is seen in mice that are doubly IL-6 and G-CSFR deficient. By understanding how this cytokine functions, scientists can further explore ways to improve platelet generation for therapeutic purposes.

INTENDED USE

Mouse IL-6 ELISA kit can be used for determining amounts of interleukin-6 (IL-6, HGF, IFNB2, CDF, IL6, BSF2) present in mouse serum, plasma, other biological fluids and tissue homogenate samples.
