TORCH panel is a series of tests which can are used to screen new born babies and in some cases the pregnant mother for the presence of specific infections during pregnancy. These infections can be fatal and in many cases cause birth defects in a baby. The tests are usually immunoassay based which are able to detect specific antibodies that are produced by the immune system when it is exposed to these infectious diseases.
The blood test which make upon the TORCH panel include:
- Toxoplasmosis
- Rubella
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
However, recently the use of TORCH screen has decline because there are newer tests that have been development which are more accurate and specific. In some case other infections may also be tests at the same time for example hepatitis B, epstein-barr virus, syphilis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), parvovirus B19 and varicella-zoster virus.
